Connect familiar activities into an account of your day.

Beginner · A1 foundationAbout 15 minutesNot started

What you’ll work on

  • Use common pronominal routine verbs.
  • Sequence activities with puis and ensuite.
  • Say how often something happens.
READ & LISTEN

A short conversation

Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Read along, then try each line aloud.

Camille

Tu te lèves à quelle heure ?

What time do you get up?

Alex

Je me lève à sept heures. Ensuite, je prends mon petit déjeuner.

I get up at seven. Then I have breakfast.

Camille

Tu travailles le samedi ?

Do you work on Saturdays?

Alex

Parfois. Normalement, je me repose le week-end.

Sometimes. Normally, I rest on the weekend.

Keep the little pronoun

Se lever means to get up. In je me lève, both me and the verb form belong to the subject. With tu, use tu te lèves; with nous, use nous nous levons.

Se coucher means to go to bed: je me couche. The pronouns are me, te, se, nous, vous, se. They change to m’, t’, and s’ before a vowel sound. Learn the complete routine phrase.

Je me lève à sept heures.I get up at seven.
Vous vous couchez tôt ?Do you go to bed early?

Put actions in order

D’abord means first, ensuite means next, puis means then, and enfin means finally. Short connected sentences are enough to explain a routine clearly.

Not every daily activity uses me. Je prends mon petit déjeuner means I have breakfast; je travaille means I work. Use a pronominal form when the verb requires that pattern, not merely because the action concerns you.

D'abord, je me lève. Ensuite, je mange.First, I get up. Then I eat.
Enfin, je me couche. Finally, I go to bed.

Describe frequency

Toujours means always, souvent means often, parfois means sometimes, and normalement means usually or normally. These words can make your routine more precise.

Ne… jamais means never in standard written French. Jamais replaces pas: je ne travaille jamais le dimanche. Do not add pas to that basic negative pattern.

Je prends souvent le bus.I often take the bus.
Je ne travaille jamais le dimanche.I never work on Sundays.
