READ & LISTEN

A short conversation

Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Read along, then try each line aloud.

Alex

Bonjour. Je voudrais un thé et du pain, s'il vous plaît.

Hello. I would like a tea and some bread, please.

Server

Sur place ou à emporter ?

For here or to take away?

Alex

Sur place. Vous fermez à quelle heure ?

For here. What time do you close?

Server

À dix-huit heures.

At six p.m.

Alex

Merci. Et l'addition, s'il vous plaît.

Thank you. And the bill, please.

Try it before looking back

Complete the questions before returning to the earlier explanations. Revealing an answer helps you study but does not earn points for that attempt. Mistakes identify useful review items; they do not stop you from continuing the course.

Choose the amount and the article

One serving can use un or une, as in un café. An unspecified amount uses du, de la, or de l’, as in du pain and de l’eau. When the noun is plural and unspecified, use des. After a basic negative quantity, use de.

Check numbers in context

Read a price, a clock time, and a date aloud. They use related numbers but different frames: vingt euros, il est vingt heures, le vingt novembre. If a price or time is unclear, repeat it back or ask to see it written.

Le café ouvre à neuf heures. The café opens at nine.
