  • Recognize left, right, and straight ahead.
  • Use à pied and en with transport.
READ & LISTEN

A short conversation

Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Read along, then try each line aloud.

Alex

Excusez-moi, où est la gare ?

Excuse me, where is the station?

Camille

Allez tout droit, puis tournez à gauche.

Go straight ahead, then turn left.

Alex

C'est loin ?

Is it far?

Camille

Non, vous pouvez y aller à pied. Dix minutes environ.

No, you can go there on foot. About ten minutes.

Ask a focused question

Où est la gare ? asks where the station is. Pour aller à la gare, s’il vous plaît ? is a useful shortened request for directions. Begin with excusez-moi or bonjour when approaching someone.

C’est loin ? asks whether it is far. If the answer includes several turns, repeat the first step to check it. You can also ask the person to show you on a map.

Pour aller à la gare, s'il vous plaît ?How do I get to the station, please?
C'est près d'ici ?Is it near here?

Recognize instructions

Allez tout droit means go straight ahead. Tournez à droite means turn right; tournez à gauche means turn left. These are vous commands, a useful polite form for directions.

Puis means then. A route is easier to follow as two short instructions than as one long sentence. Listen for landmarks such as la banque, le musée, and le feu.

Tournez à droite au feu.Turn right at the traffic light.
La gare est à gauche. The station is on the left.

Choose transport

À pied means on foot. Use en in en bus, en train, en voiture, and en métro. Common cycling usage includes à vélo.

Aller à + le becomes aller au: je vais au musée. À + les becomes aux. À la and à l’ remain separate forms: à la gare, à l’hôtel.

Je vais au musée en bus.I am going to the museum by bus.
Je vais à la gare à pied.I am walking to the station.
