About the French flashcards
The collection has 5,000 distinct words and expressions: 417 original beginner cards and 4,583 dictionary-derived cards. Every card has an English meaning and a bilingual example.
Meanings and examples
Dictionary entries and their usage examples are adapted from English Wiktionary contributors through the Kaikki.org / Wiktextract French extraction. The source dictionary dump is dated 2026-10-01; the extraction is dated 2026-10-25. Each sourced example belongs to the selected dictionary sense. Source links and sense identifiers are retained in the export.
Examples include full sentences and short usage phrases. The beginner examples were written for this edition. Dictionary quotations attributed to third-party works were excluded. Cards teach one selected meaning; a word can have other meanings, grammatical uses, and regional variations.
Automated integrity checks and targeted editorial checks cover duplicate cards, example matching, translations, and required fields. The entire collection has not received an independent expert review. Noun genders are shown when established in the source; they are not guessed from word endings.
Choosing what to study
Start with the 150-card beginner path, or one of 4 starter decks. The 100 numbered sets contain 50 cards each. All sets refer to the same cards, so saved familiarity follows a word across different views.
Choose from 15 topics and these suggested study groups:
- Beginner: Start with useful everyday words, simple descriptions, and common conversation patterns.
- Intermediate: Expand everyday vocabulary and talk about experiences, interests, and a wider range of situations.
- Advanced: Explore less familiar meanings, abstract ideas, and more specialized public, professional, or academic language.
Topic and difficulty suggestions are study aids, not assessed CEFR levels. The wider collection includes literary, figurative, and specialized language. The default order places beginner cards first, then uses wordfreq 3.1.1 spelling-frequency scores. It is not a definitive ranking of the 5,000 most common French words.
Pronunciation and progress
Listen to the target word or the complete displayed example with a French Google voice when configured, or a device voice as a fallback. Audio is generated speech. Progress and preferences are saved in this browser; no account is required. Familiarity is your own study label.
